Disney's Descendants Compared to Mattel's Ever After High

Beauty and the Beast in a Disneyland parade
Sometime in 2015 a new Disney Channel original movie will hit the small screen. It's called "Descendants" and it follows the life of the son of Beauty and the Beast. He's getting ready to take the throne and he wants to make some changes.

It turns out there's a far off island that holds all villains of the storybook world. Every evil queen, step-sister and social outcast is there and so are their offspring.

Beauty and the Beast's son (we don't know his name yet) decides that the teenage descendants of The Evil Queen, Jafar, Cruella De Vil and Maleficent should be given a second chance. They're allowed back into the kingdom to go to high school/prep school with the children of our beloved Disney heroes.

Drama unfolds, however, when the descendants of the villains are pressured by their parents to help them regain power in the land. Now they must choose between being good or being evil.

In some respects Descendants is so much like Mattel's Ever After High storyline that at first I thought they were working on this together. But that doesn't appear to be the case. Maybe Disney just saw a good idea in the Ever After High saga and decided to do it as well.

In my humble opinion, the storyline to Descendants is much better than Mattel's story. Don't get me wrong I love Ever After High. But the explanation for why they have to follow in their parents footsteps to be good or evil is just a little silly. They have to do everything exactly like their parents? Why?.....there's not really an answer to that. It's just what has to be done.

I can play along and enjoy the EAH series but I really like that Disney decided to give their royal and evil descendants more depth. The storyline just seems more believable. The kids don't just have to follow in their parents footsteps in some declaration of absurdity, they have to choose between the goodness in their hearts and the pressures of their parents to be just like them. Ultimately that comes across as more believable and relatable.

I was surprised Descendants is only going to be a Disney Channel Movie and not a series. Maybe if the movie is well received Disney will decide to turn it into a series. There is so much potential with this storyline that it makes me wonder if they're just testing the market with the movie.  I don't think Disney has ever turned a Disney Channel Movie into a show before(they've only made tv movies from their shows to the best of my knowledge). But anything is possible. I know we're really looking forward to watching Descendants when it comes out at my house.

I continue thinking that Descendants copied Ever After High, I new Ever After High came first and there is no justification, may be the story of descendants is deeper but at the end it's just the same story! they have to deside to follow their parent steps or not! and then they realized Descendants dolls? come on and with no other company than Hasbro! Disney has such amazing stuff! I can't believe they need to copy ideas! unbelievable

@Erika Kiseki this whole article is stupid. Descendants is a movie version of a book called Isle of the Lost. If anything the author of the book stole the idea.

Actually Isle of the Lost was inspired by Descendants... but I don't think disney copycat anything. The idea of Descendants was in work way before Ever After High... but this things take time so it was released after 'Ever After High' and considering that Disney invented the concert of fairytale. . It looks to me that Mattel is the copycat here..
